Shree Naina Devi Ji Temple is one of the greatest prominent places of worship in Himachal Pradesh and is devoted to Goddess Sati, who was an avatar of Goddess Durga. The temple is situated in Distt Bilaspur and it is one of the 51 Shakti peeths, where the eyes of Sati fell, after Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 pieces to save the Earth from Shiva’s wrath. A great crowd of tourists and supporters from different parts of the country visit this holy place to seek blessings of Maa Durga. The temple observers a huge crowd, especially during Shravan Ashtami and in the Navratras of Chaitra Ashwin.
This temple was built by Raja Bir Chand in the eight century, when he starts the beautiful image of Goddess Durga on top of the hill. A superior fair is organized during Chaitra, Shravan, and Ashwin Navratri, where millions of visitors from nearby states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, visit Sri Naina Devi Ji Temple to attend the festivities. Though a lot of people choose to trek till the top of this hill, chanting Jai Mata Di, sundry simply take Palkis for a relaxed ride. Latent facilities are also offered on the way, where visitors can relax for some time and have refreshments.
Naina Devi temple is also recognized as Mahishpeetha since the Devi killed the demon Mahishasura here at this place. According to tradition, Mahishasura was a strong demon who had got the boon to live forever. This boon was given to him by Lord Brahma on the condition that he can be defeated by an unmarried girl. After getting the boon, the demon Mahishasura started troubling the earth and divinities and everyone got into panic. Then all the deities combined their powers and created a Devi who could defeat the demon Mahishasura. The deities offered the Devi diverse types of weapons. The demon got mesmerised with the prettiness of the Devi and proposed her to marry him. The Devi put the condition that if he could overthrow her in the war then she would marry him. But during the war the Devi defeated the demon and took out both his eyes.
The believers can take stairs from the bus mortal to reach the temple. Cable car comfort is also available near the bus terminal. Light vehicles and cars can take another different route which is about 1.5 km long to reach the main temple.
How to Reach Naina Devi Temple
This famous temple is connected by National Highway no. 21 and the nearest airport from here is Chandigarh, which is connected with New Delhi by Jet Airways and Indian Airlines Flights. The distance between Bilaspur and Chandigarh is approximately 100 kms, and so, I can easily access the temple via car or bus.
