Best time to visit Kaziranga National Park Assam

Kaziranga National Park Assam is a well-known national park of India situated in between two districts of Assam – Golaghat and Nagaon. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga National Park is renowned for having the largest population in the world of the prehistoric looking one-horned rhinoceros. Much of the park’s terrain consists of swamp and grasslands, making it the perfect habitat for these creatures along with about 40 major mammals. These include wild elephants, tiger, buffaloes, gaur, monkeys, deer, otters, badgers, leopards, and wild boar.

The Kaziranga National Park Assam is located on the banks of river Brahmaputra. It has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. It covers an area of about 430 sq km. The park is a home to two-thirds of one-horned rhinoceroses of the world. The Forest Department of Assam published the latest census of March, 2015 which recorded the population of Rhinos in Kaziranga National Park to be 2401 out of which 1,651 adults, 294 sub-adults, 251 juveniles and 205 cubs are recorded. Along with the recognized wildlife NGOs, the department conducted an operation to preserve wildlife.

Kaziranga National Park Assam Ranges and Tourist Complex

The park has four ranges — Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agoratuli), and Burhapahar. The most accessible and popular range is the grassy Central one, at Kohora. The Western range, 25 minutes from Kohora, is the shortest circuit but has the highest density of rhinos. It’s recommended for seeing rhinos and buffaloes. The Eastern range is around 40 minutes from Kohora and offers the longest circuit. Birding and wetlands are the highlights there.

Attractions of Kaziranga National Park Assam

The actual attraction of Kaziranga National Park Assam is its broad diversity of wildlife beauty. The chief riches trove of Kaziranga is vast One Horned Rhinoceros, but it is also house to other species of flora and fauna for instance elephants, wild Asiatic water buffaloes, swamp deer, hog deer, gaur, sambar, Indian Muntjac and many more. After it, Kaziranga with Tiger Reserve is also attracting Ganges Dolphin. Kaziranga National park is also familiar as a significant bird watching point by Birdlife.

When to Visit

Kaziranga National Park Assam is open daily from November 1 to April 30 every year. (However, in recent years, certain parts of it have been opened earlier in October to increase tourism. It depends on accessibility after the monsoon).

According to locals, the best time to visit is during late February and March, when the December and January peak season rush is over. The park gets extremely busy during the peak season, and it’s likely to negatively affect your experience there due to a large number of people allowed in.
